The primary objective of this product is to provide users with an overview of data and notifications to ensure their clinical trial is running smoothly. The target audience includes pharmaceutical companies or contract organizations that manage clinical trials.

Problem

Based on customer feedback, it was necessary to address several usability issues. The Excel-like layout (see figure 1), which only allowed horizontal scrolling, made it difficult for users to find data. Notifications required extra clicks to view. Moreover, the layout was not tablet-friendly, which was becoming a popular device choice among users.

Solution

I worked closely with product and engineering groups, I created an HTML prototype with minimal design to begin conversations around what could be done to solve the usability issues.

The results were a touch-friendly responsive layout with notifications and visual indicators displayed on the homepage for immediate viewing and interaction.  Horizontal scrolling was eliminated by moving the filter bar above the table along with the ability to toggle between grid and graphic views of data.

I built the prototype from reusable templates and Kendo UI components.
